Happy to me!

I started taking "Birthday Self-Portraits" in 2003 at the age of 31. This photo was taken inside our "first home", a hut built for us in the Bolivian rain forest. I had just been woken up by Tsimane women and children gathering outside our hut at some ungodly hour and wasn't in the best of moods.

Ken's Print Club.

I use to want to be a photojournalist. But I'm not one, and probably never will do such work. I'm way to opinionated and emotionally attached to my photography.

But Kenneth Jarecke is a true photojournalist. (One of the best I have seen in quite sometime.) It's not often that a photographers work stuns me these days. But Kenneth's has.

Please make sure you check out his "Print Club" and invest in some photography.

Quite possiably the best thing to happen in Skateboarding in years.

This was bound to happen. I just wish the X-Games would have committed to pulling the trigger and killing the whole vert thing once and for all.

Everyone is going to want an invite to this contest next year.

Pads are going to be come cool again, mark my word!

Check out the coverage.

Quote from Concrete Disciples:

The Don't Dew It Tour.---
It was no great coincidence that the Rumble in Ramona was scheduled precisely on the same days as the Orlando, FL Dew Tour finals. This meant that any vert monsters that might have turned this event into a spectacle of out-jocking one another were nowhere near the corner junkyard in the desert. Even if they happened to show up, they would have been denied unless invited. Some riders may even have been turned away at the gate. We submit here, the rules of the Rumble for your approval:

1. The List is Law-If you're not on it, you don't skate. Period.
2. Tricks are half of the points.
3. Style is half of the points.
4. Taking this event too seriously? You get egged.
5. This is meant for people to have fun and skate with each other and NOT against one another.

Now numbers 4 and 5 are quite possibly the best rules on the list. This shit is specifically targeted towards those who might have forgotten why the fuck we all started skateboarding in the first place. It was fun once, right? When camaraderie mattered, when cliques were irrelevant, and when the money simply wasn't there. We skated for own liberty and freedoms, and we expressed ourselves in a way that could not have a dollar value attached to it. So when we all arrived here in the present, in Ramona, the competitive aspect was also tightly controlled, in other words the awards were something designed around guys pushing themselves and having a blast rather than taking down other people for big money. And speaking of money, none really changed hands. The awards were designed to add something to the already hot expression session, targets to shoot at, if in fact anyone cared. The aspect of liberty shouldn't be lost on anyone here. Free and expressive skateboarding in the free outdoor air, free of compulsory do or die trick lists, far from the prying eyes of mainstream America. The way it was always meant to be.This belongs to us, it always has and it always will.

Don't forget about the FAIRY.

The Skate Fairy's oh so good.

Skateboard History Lesson

SneakerFreaker!

"They are for their time. It’s interesting to think that if they got their product right, they could actually be really huge now.

Yeah I don’t know, I just think when skateboarding died in about ‘82, they died with it. I remember in Skateboarder or Thrasher – they had a Hobie sale – five dollars for a pair. You could send away to this one liquidating company for kryptonite wheels for five dollars, decks for ten dollars. The death of skateboarding killed a lot of brands like that, I guess they just went back into their original business again."

Repeat after me. Learn from the past and do not repeat your mistakes!

Bombing Hills with Steve.

Goodbye material world! from SPONTAZY on Vimeo.

This is Steve, some of you may also know Steve by the name of "Venom" a character of sorts that would suddenly appear at many a great skate sessions over the years.

I heard earlier this year Venom was hanging up his hat. However, just before we all could shed a tear, SPONTAZY was born. You may find this all amusing, I know, it's a bit silly, and it's suppose to be. But Steve's genuine about his goofing, and it has earned him sponsor ships with Emerica shoes and Bones wheels. Hell he even had his own board out at one point!

See, sometimes sponsorship in skateboarding isn't about being the best skateboarder on the planet. Sometimes it's about being so unique that people want to support your creativity.

One more thing, the real reason for this post is because this is where I learned to bomb hills. It's a park just outside of my home town of Lincoln NE. And yes, those "gaps" in the sidewalk will pitch you off your board face first into the grass.

MC Load and SkaterAid.

So I went to Decatur on some business Sunday afternoon, and I drive by a sign that says "SkaterAid" then see a kid on a board Downtown and ask if there is a skate shop near by.

He tells me no, but that he's going to some sort of contest to see if he can get sponsored.

OK? What's the deal?

Best Trick Contest.

Mike who wants to be sponsored. Oh to be sixteen again.

Photog's. I know "D" (on the Left) was good friends with Ian Wochatz.

Best Trick contest winning trick, Travis Murphy of Reveal Skateboards with a Kickflip 5-0.

Matt coming out of a bad ass BS Smith.

So I go back to where the sign is, and I kid you not. This was one of the best skateboard related events I've been to. First, it was all to raise money for families of children who are battling cancer. Second, it felt like I was in a time warp, as it was held in a rough parking lot with just a few ramps, just like back in the day, before we were lucky enough to have so many skateparks at our disposal. Third, Beer, and this was good beer from my favorite Atlanta brewery, 5 Seasons.
Now you know the rest of the story. OH BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE.

Then to top it all off the Element team showed up. Darrell Stanton hung around looking cool, Jeremy Wray skated a quarter pipe your mom could blunt on, and Brent Atchley styled out with some freaky sock/shoes. I met new Atlanta resident, wood bender and SPOT Party Team Member Alan Russell who explained the inner workings of EXPN Super Park ramp. Welcome to Georgia, Alan.

Thomas Taylor played a big part in organizing the event and deserves a solid high five for his efforts. But the best part in my opinion was Load. Who knew Load was so talented on the mic. I'm serious, he did a great job keeping everyone entertained at SkaterAid.

What's the Dinosour Jr and Alien Workshop Connection?

Interesting interview with J. Mascis by some dude named Zac.

See it all at http://www.caughtinthecrossfire.com/music/interviews/99

Skateboarding and Dinosaur Jr always went hand in hand and still do in the naughties, why is that?

I dunno, I have no idea! We went to LA on the Bug tour and there were all these skaters everywhere. We met Neil Blender and some other guys and I always let them use the music and stuff.

So are you proud to be associated with skateboarding then?

Yeah I guess, sometimes I even get sent t-shirts and skateboards here!

Did you ever skate back in the day?

Yeah, mostly we would skate quarter pipes, 8 foot high ramps and stuff....

I mean this was long ago now.

Do you remember what your first board was?

My first skateboard was a Flight.they were like this company that ripped off Alva, I had Mid Tracks and red Kriptonics 65's..until my Dad gave it away.

Neil Blender did some art for you, do you remember which sleeves?

Yeah....he's done several record covers for me like Without a Sound, J.Mascis and The Fog, Leaving on a Jet Plane 7", and the back cover of another one.

Have you seen any recent skateboarding? What are your thoughts on it?

I see various stuff from Alien Workshop as Neil Blender sends me stuff. It's cool I guess.

So good.

Bill Danforth's Shoes for Sale?

WTF. It's insane how much people are paying for old skate boards! I just can't encourage people to spend a bunch of money on a skateboard that will never be ridden! What I find most interesting is that the old pros are getting in on the action. Shouldn't that be a clear indication that these things have little actual value!

That said, I am pretty geeked by these, they have to be the rarest of the rare?

And, I guess it's cool that Dan is actually selling these himself.
And, they are my size after all.

Todd Congelliere had street skills too.

Saw this posted on Good Problem. Happy to know someone else still appreciates Todd's style.

Glad I bought my reissue of Todd's "Icee Bear" deck when I did. Looks like they are no longer available.

I'm geeked, I found a Panasonic FX35 "Demo" through B&H photo. That means "open box special".
