I started taking "Birthday Self-Portraits" in 2003 at the age of 31. This photo was taken inside our "first home", a hut built for us in the Bolivian rain forest. I had just been woken up by Tsimane women and children gathering outside our hut at some ungodly hour and wasn't in the best of moods.
